Pretty much all of us, at some point, deal with damage to our windshields. But many people don’t realize that the chip or crack can be easily repaired, and if done correctly, the life of your windshield can be extended rather than being replaced.
The most common windshield damage comes from other vehicles traveling in close proximity kicking up rocks. Most people tend to ignore when a rock smacks the windshield, as the majority of chips are very small when the damage occurs. They will wait until the crack becomes a big eyesore before tending to it. Most people think that the only fix is to replace the whole windshield, and so they wait until the windshield is riddled with cracks, and then finally replace it.
There is a better alternative. Instead of replacing your windshield, you can repair it.
Fix the damage, extend the life of your windshield
Windshield glass repair has become more common over the last decade as a more cost-effective way of dealing with damage. Today, a new car is more technologically complex, and consequently, often more expensive to repair. Nowadays we have heated and cooled glass, heated wiper blades, lane departure warning, and collision warning just to name a few.
Windshield replacements can cost anywhere from $300 to $1300 (sometimes even more), while a lot of average windshield damage can cost as little as $55 and may take just 30 minutes to complete the repair.
You may have been approached by someone in a parking lot doing windshield repair claiming that the repair was “free”. But we all know there are no free lunches. When they say the repair is “free” they are really saying, that they need your insurance information because your auto insurance may cover the repair.
Almost all insurance companies provide windshield repair for no out of pocket cost, but there are a few conditions that have to be met first. The person insured has to have full coverage. Depending on who the insurance company is, they may need to do an inspection before the repair can be done. You also need a repair technician who is qualified to do the repair. A windshield repair technician must be qualified by the NWRA (National Windshield Repair Association).
Windshield glass repair is being adopted by most major auto glass companies as time goes on. But many companies have run scams just trying to make a quick dollar then move along with little to no regard for the customer.
